SDLT is a tax paid when you buy property or land in England and Northern Ireland over a certain price. From 1 April 2025, the nil-rate band is £125,000 for standard purchases. Scotland and Wales have their own land transaction taxes (LBTT and LTT respectively).

What is the first-time buyer relief?

Accepted Answer

First-time buyers pay no SDLT on the first £300,000 and 5% on the portion between £300,001 and £500,000. This relief only applies if the purchase price is £500,000 or less. If the price exceeds £500,000, standard rates apply.
